What Are Noble Gases?

Noble gases are the elements that make up Group 18 of the periodic table. They are helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon. Noble gases are all gases at room temperature and they are all colorless, odorless, and tasteless. They are also very unreactive, which means that they do not easily combine with other elements to form compounds.

Why Are Noble Gases Unreactive?

Noble gases are unreactive because they have a full valence shell of electrons. A valence shell is the outermost electron shell of an atom, and it is the electrons in the valence shell that determine the chemical properties of an element. Noble gases have a full valence shell of eight electrons, which is the most stable electron configuration. This means that noble gases do not need to gain or lose electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration, so they do not react with other elements.

Uses of Noble Gases

Noble gases are used in a variety of applications. Helium is used in balloons and party balloons because it is lighter than air and non-flammable. Neon is used in advertising signs because it glows brightly when an electric current is passed through it. Argon is used in welding and incandescent light bulbs because it does not react with other elements. Krypton is used in fluorescent light bulbs because it glows brightly when an electric current is passed through it. Xenon is used in high-intensity discharge lamps and in medical imaging. Radon is used in cancer therapy.
