The Mississippi Freedom Struggle was a nonviolent campaign to desegregate the state of Mississippi and win voting rights for African Americans. The campaign was led by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and attracted hundreds of volunteers from across the United States and around the world.

The Freedom Struggle began in earnest in 1961 with the Freedom Rides, in which interracial groups of activists traveled through the South to challenge segregation in interstate travel. The Freedom Rides were met with violence and resistance from white supremacists, but the activists refused to be deterred.

In the summer of 1964, SNCC and CORE organized the Mississippi Freedom Summer campaign, which brought over 700 volunteers to the state to register black voters and organize voter education classes. The campaign was a success, and by the end of the summer, over 80,000 African Americans had registered to vote in Mississippi.

The Freedom Struggle culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which outlawed racial discrimination in voting. The Act was a major victory for the civil rights movement, and it helped to bring about the end of segregation in the United States.

The Mississippi Freedom Struggle was a success because it was based on a strong tradition of organizing and activism in the black community. The Freedom Struggle was also successful because it attracted support from a wide range of people, including white allies, international volunteers, and church groups.

The Mississippi Freedom Struggle had a profound impact on the course of American history. It helped to bring about the civil rights movement, the end of segregation, and the expansion of voting rights for African Americans. The struggle also helped to raise awareness of the plight of black people in the United States and inspired a new generation of activists.

The Mississippi Freedom Struggle is a story of courage, determination, and sacrifice. It is a story that should be told and retold for generations to come. The Freedom Struggle is a reminder that change is possible, even in the face of great adversity. It is a testament to the power of nonviolent resistance and the importance of organizing and activism.
