Morton served in the Army for over 20 years. He saw combat in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Ia Drang. Morton was one of the few soldiers who survived the battle, which was one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. After the war, Morton continued to serve in the Army. He retired from the Army in 1986 with the rank of sergeant first class.

Morton's story is a testament to the courage, determination, and selflessness of the men and women who serve our country. He was a true American hero who risked his life to protect his fellow soldiers. Morton's story is an inspiration to us all.

The Battle of Ia Drang

The Battle of Ia Drang was one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. It was fought in November 1965 between the United States Army and the North Vietnamese Army. The battle lasted for three days and resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 soldiers. Morton was one of the few soldiers who survived the battle.

On the first day of the battle, Morton's unit was ambushed by the North Vietnamese. Morton was wounded in the leg, but he continued to fight. He helped to evacuate his wounded comrades and he killed several enemy soldiers. On the second day of the battle, Morton's unit was again ambushed. This time, Morton was wounded in the chest. He was evacuated to a field hospital, but he died a few hours later.

Morton's actions during the Battle of Ia Drang earned him the Medal of Honor. He was awarded the medal posthumously in 1968.

The Medal of Honor

The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces. It is awarded for acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty.

Morton was one of only 3,500 people who have been awarded the Medal of Honor since it was created in 1861. He is one of only 196 people who have been awarded the medal for their actions during the Vietnam War.

The Medal of Honor is a symbol of courage, determination, and selflessness. It is a reminder of the sacrifices that our soldiers make to protect our country.

Jay Morton was a true American hero. He risked his life to protect his fellow soldiers and he died a hero's death. Morton's story is a testament to the courage, determination, and selflessness of the men and women who serve our country. We are forever grateful for their service.
