The battle lasted for three days and resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 soldiers. Morton was one of the few soldiers who survived the battle.
On the first day of the battle, Morton's unit was ambushed by the North Vietnamese. Morton was wounded in the leg, but he continued to fight. He helped to evacuate his wounded comrades and he killed several enemy soldiers. On the second day of the battle, Morton's unit was again ambushed. This time, Morton was wounded in the chest. He was evacuated to a field hospital, but he died a few hours later.
Morton's actions during the Battle of Ia Drang earned him the Medal of Honor. He was awarded the medal posthumously in 1968.
The Medal of Honor
