Among the troops who stormed the beaches that day were American, British, Canadian, and French soldiers. They faced fierce resistance from the German defenders, but eventually managed to secure a foothold on the continent. The Normandy Invasion was a turning point in World War II, and helped to pave the way for the Allied victory.

Firsthand Accounts

American Soldier: John Steele

"I was a private first class in the 101st Airborne Division. We were dropped behind enemy lines on the night of June 5th, and our mission was to secure the town of Sainte-Mère-Église. We landed in the middle of a German column, and the fighting was fierce. But we managed to take the town, and held it until the reinforcements arrived."

British Soldier: Tom Hanks

"I was a lieutenant in the 6th Airborne Division. We landed on Sword Beach at 07:00 hours, and immediately came under heavy fire from the German defenders. We fought our way up the beach, and eventually reached the town of Caen. The fighting was intense, but we managed to liberate the town."

Canadian Soldier: Donald Sutherland

"I was a corporal in the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. We landed on Juno Beach at 08:00 hours, and faced heavy resistance from the German defenders. We fought our way inland, and eventually reached the town of Carpiquet. The fighting was fierce, but we managed to liberate the town."

French Resistance Fighter: Yvonne Cormeau

"I was a member of the French Resistance, and I helped to guide the Allied troops as they advanced inland. I knew the area well, and I was able to help them avoid the German strongpoints. The fighting was intense, but we eventually managed to liberate the town of Bayeux."

The Normandy Invasion was a turning point in World War II, and helped to pave the way for the Allied victory. The brave men and women who participated in this historic event deserve our eternal gratitude.
