Synopsis

Submarine is a gripping Cold War naval thriller that takes readers on a heart-stopping journey into the depths of the ocean and the heart of international conflict. Set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the novel follows the crew of the USS Thresher, a nuclear-powered submarine tasked with a perilous mission.

The Thresher's mission is to track and destroy a Soviet submarine that has launched a nuclear missile at the United States. As the Thresher races to intercept the Soviet submarine, the tension mounts. The crew must navigate treacherous waters, dodge enemy attacks, and make life-or-death decisions that could determine the fate of the world.

Characters

The characters in Submarine are richly drawn and relatable. The novel's protagonist is Captain James Caldwell, the commanding officer of the USS Thresher. Caldwell is a brilliant and experienced submariner, but he is also a flawed man with a troubled past. He is haunted by the loss of his wife and child in a car accident, and he struggles to balance his duty to his country with his desire to protect his remaining family.

Other key characters in the novel include:

  • Lieutenant Commander Mike Murphy, the Thresher's executive officer. Murphy is a loyal and dedicated officer, but he is also ambitious and sometimes reckless.
  • Sonar Technician Seaman First Class John "Doc" Watson, a brilliant but enigmatic young man who is haunted by his experiences in the Vietnam War.
  • Machinist's Mate First Class Tony "Bones" Bonafucci, a wisecracking and irreverent sailor who provides comic relief in the midst of the tension.

Setting

Submarine is set in the depths of the ocean, a world of darkness, silence, and danger. The novel's claustrophobic setting adds to the tension and suspense, as the crew of the Thresher must constantly battle the elements and their own fears.

The novel also captures the political tension of the Cold War era. The United States and the Soviet Union are locked in a deadly game of nuclear brinkmanship, and the Thresher's mission is a microcosm of the larger conflict.

Themes

Submarine explores a number of themes, including:

  • The dangers of nuclear war
  • The sacrifices that soldiers make in the name of their country
  • The importance of courage and resilience in the face of adversity
