Schneidereit was a man of many talents and interests. He was the co-founder of the Arizona Power Company and served as its president for over 30 years. He was also involved in banking, mining, and real estate. Politically, Schneidereit was a member of the Arizona Territorial Legislature and later served as mayor of Phoenix from 1911 to 1913.

Beyond his business and political pursuits, Schneidereit was also known for his generous philanthropy. He donated land for the construction of several public parks in Phoenix, including Encanto Park and Phoenix Mountain Park. He also established the Fred Schneidereit Foundation, which continues to support a variety of charitable causes in Arizona to this day.

The Early Years

Fred Schneidereit was born in the small town of Braubach, Germany, on October 12, 1863. His father was a merchant and his mother was a homemaker. Schneidereit grew up in a close-knit family and attended local schools.

As a young man, Schneidereit developed a strong interest in business and finance. He studied economics and accounting at the University of Frankfurt and graduated with honors in 1884. After completing his studies, Schneidereit worked for several years in the banking industry in Germany.

The Move to America

In 1886, Schneidereit decided to immigrate to the United States. He arrived in New York City with little money and no knowledge of English. However, he was determined to succeed and quickly found work as a clerk in a dry goods store.

Schneidereit worked hard and quickly rose through the ranks of the company. By 1890, he was the manager of the store. In 1894, Schneidereit decided to move to Arizona in search of new opportunities.

The Arizona Years

Schneidereit arrived in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1894. He immediately saw the potential of the city and began to invest in its growth. He founded the Arizona Power Company in 1895, which provided electricity to Phoenix and other parts of the state.

Under Schneidereit's leadership, the Arizona Power Company became one of the most successful businesses in the state. He also invested in banking, mining, and real estate. Schneidereit was a shrewd businessman and he made a fortune from his investments.

Political Career

In addition to his business pursuits, Schneidereit was also active in politics. He was elected to the Arizona Territorial Legislature in 1903 and served for four years. In 1911, he was elected mayor of Phoenix.

As mayor, Schneidereit oversaw a period of great growth and development in the city. He established a new city government, built new parks and schools, and promoted the development of industry. Schneidereit was a popular mayor and he was re-elected to a second term in 1913.

Philanthropic Contributions

Schneidereit was a generous philanthropist who donated millions of dollars to various charitable causes. He donated land for the construction of several public parks in Phoenix, including Encanto Park and Phoenix Mountain Park. He also established the Fred Schneidereit Foundation, which continues to support a variety of charitable causes in Arizona to this day.

Schneidereit's philanthropy was motivated by a desire to make a difference in the lives of others. He believed that everyone had a responsibility to help those in need. Schneidereit's generosity has left a lasting legacy in Arizona.

Legacy

Schneidereit died in Phoenix in 1938 at the age of 74. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Phoenix. The Fred Schneidereit Foundation continues to support a variety of charitable causes in Arizona, including education, arts and culture, and healthcare.
